In the same year, now with an established Sustainable Management Policy for the whole system, Sicredi initiated the construction of a model that could gauge and access the positive impact of its operations. Initial data was studied by gauging the positive transformations we have generated in economic, social and environmental terms in the lives of people and our host communities. Aspect linked to the generation of value - which could now be monitored over time and continuously improved - and establishing goals and objectives.
Research data were then analyzed and used in a study by FIPE (Economic Studies Institute Foundation) about the positive impacts of credit unions in the Brazilian economy.
Published in December 2019, the study assessed the economic data from all Brazilian municipalities with and without credit unions, between 1994 and 2017, applying the Differences-in-Differences methodology, a globally recognized means to gauge public policy impacts. The research showed a positive impact of 48 billion Brazilian reais in municipalities in one year, with the credit unions responsible for creating 79,000 new companies and generating some 278,000 jobs.
Another point of engagement between Sicredi and sustainability values and best practices was the effort to adhere to the UN Global Compact, in December 2019. At the time, independent credit unions and centrals voted to adopt the measures and join the initiative, aimed at encouraging companies around the world to apply corporate responsibility and sustainability practices by engaging in these ten principles related to human rights, employment, the environment and corruption.
By joining, Sicredi assumed a commitment to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), adopting sustainable development as a focus and incorporating goals established by the organization to be reached by 2030. These goals are considered essential to preserving our planet, to the sustainable development of society and to improving people’s quality of life.
