O modelo de cooperativa adotado pelos pioneiros de Nova Petrópolis vinha de outro continente. Os ideais do cooperativismo de crédito atravessaram o Atlântico na bagagem do padre suíço Theodor Amstad, que desembarcou em terras brasileiras no fim do século 19, acompanhando o movimento de imigração da Europa. Os imigrantes vinham em busca de terras e oportunidades de traba­ lho. Esse fato foi motivado pela escassez de trabalhadores existente no Brasil. O País precisava substituir a mão de obra dos africanos, reduzida pelo fim do tráfico de escravos em 1850 e pela abolição da escravatura em 18881.
No Rio Grande do Sul, onde foi acomodada grande parte dos imigrantes, o acesso às informações e à infraestrutura era limitado2. Nas novas colônias, os europeus enfrentavam o desafio de construir casas e estradas, valendo­se, muitas vezes, do trabalho coletivo da própria comunidade. Embora não estivessem formalmente organi­ zados, os agricultores já possuíam os valores da ajuda mútua e da solidariedade, norteadores do cooperativismo em qualquer lugar do planeta.

The cooperative model adopted by the Nova Petrópolis pioneers came from another continent. The idea
of credit cooperativism travelled across the Atlantic with the Swiss Padre Theodor Amstad, who arrived in Brazil at the end of the 19th century during a wave of European immigration. The immigrants arrived in search of land and the promise
of work. Brazil was experiencing
a shortage of labor and needed workers to replace African workers, who were now in short supply due to the end of the slave trade in 1850 and the abolition of slavery in 1888.1
In Rio Grande do Sul, where the majority of immigrants settled, the infrastructure and access
to information were limited.2
In the new settlements, the European immigrants, faced
with the challenging tasks of building homes and roads, often worked cooperatively within
their communities. Although not formally organized, farmers already valued mutual assistance and solidarity, guided by principles of cooperativism practiced by farmers throughout the world.
